AMALFI COAST Introduction

2:22

Welcome to the Amalfi Coast, the stretch of coastline between Positano and Vietri sul Mare, overlooking the Gulf of Salerno.

This Italian gem, known as the "Divine Coast," reveals its magic in charming towns such as Positano, Amalfi, Ravello and Cetara, but there are other less well known - but equally delightful - places to explore, including Atrani, Praiano and Minori. In addition to landscapes, beaches and scenic trails, this stretch of coastline is also a testament to centuries of history, boasting architectural masterpieces such as Amalfi Cathedral, the villas of Ravello, and the Roman villa of Minori, an archaeological treasure that takes you back two thousand years in time.

As far back as the days of ancient Rome, the Amalfi Coast was already a popular vacation spot, where the Romans built splendid villas.

However, the peak of development and splendor for these villages was during the Middle Ages, and in particular the period between the late 9th century and the first half of the 11th century, when Amalfi became one of the four most commercially influential Italian cities in the entire Mediterranean.

On your journey along the Amalfi Coast, each place will offer you unforgettable experiences in a unique setting.

You’ll fall in love with marvels of nature, such as the beaches of Praiano, bathed by crystal-clear waters; the Emerald Grotto of Conca dei Marini, and the striking Fiordo di Furore. And if you love walking, don't miss the Sentiero degli Dei, a scenic route that connects the hamlet of Bomerano to Nocelle, near Positano.

Remember that the Amalfi Coast is also an excellent base from which to explore other extraordinary destinations, such as Sorrento and Capri, expanding your trip with a variety of unforgettable scenery.

An interesting fact: Off the coast of Positano lie the Li Galli islands, forming an archipelago also known as the Sirenusas. Legend has it that long ago, mermaids heard Orpheus playing the lyre here. The music was so wonderful that it outclassed even their singing, and the mermaids felt so humiliated that they turned themselves into the rocks that now make up the archipelago.
