MINORI AND MAIORI Minori Presentation

2:35

Minori is a small village with a history dating back thousands of years. It was an important settlement during Roman times, as evidenced by the archaeological remains of the Roman Villa from the first century AD, discovered in 1932.

I recommend visiting it, because it is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites on the Amalfi Coast, a treasure that reveals the elegance and luxury of the way of life of the Roman élite.

The dwelling is spread over several terraces, taking advantage of the natural lay of the land. The architecture reflects the classic model of Roman maritime villas, designed to allow their occupants to enjoy the view and the mild climate. The main parts of the complex include the living areas, spas, and a sophisticated water collection system.

The villa enjoyed a spa system that included several rooms designated for cold, warm, and hot baths, with heating systems under the floor and in the walls.

One of the most outstanding aspects of the villa are the mosaic floors and frescoes. The mosaics feature geometric patterns, mythological figures, and scenes from everyday life, demonstrating superb craftsmanship and an eye for detail. The wall paintings, although partly deteriorated by time, still hint at the original vivid colors and sophisticated designs.

Excavations have also unearthed numerous everyday objects, pottery, coins, and figurines that offer a valuable glimpse into the daily life of the ancient Romans.

In addition to this ancient dwelling, as you walk through the narrow streets of the village, you’ll come to the Basilica of Santa Trofimena, dedicated to the patron saint of Minori. Originally built in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 18th century, it mixes Baroque and Rococo architectural elements. Inside the church is an ancient urn containing the relics of St. Trofimena, and a large altarpiece depicting the Crucifixion, made by an artist from Siena.

Finally, a walk along a delightful path known as sentiero dei limoni, or lemon path, consisting of about 600 steps, will take you to the village of Maiori.

An interesting fact: Minori is renowned for its handmade fresh pasta. The most distinctive dish is 'ndunderi, which - surprise, surprise -  dates back to the time of the ancient Romans!
