Pietro Lorenzetti was supremely talented at depicting tragedy, as you can see from the fresco entitled “The Deposition from the Cross”: the dead body of Christ is a harrowing scene, with his distraught mother Mary’s face close to her son’s, lolling backwards in suffering.
