The Miracle of the Spring is a fresco painted by Giotto in the upper church of the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi. This fresco represents an episode in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi where he performed a miracle by making a spring of water spring from a rock during a trip to Palestine. Giotto uses techniques of composition and perspective to create a dynamic scene where the eye is drawn upwards, from the reclining man to Saint Francis, to the light emanating from the mountain peak. We can also appreciate the realism of the figures and details, such as the donkeys and the characters which testify to Giotto's talent and artistic innovation.
