Giovan Battista Filippo Basile (1825-1891), one of the leading Italian architects of the 19th century, is known for the Teatro Massimo in Palermo (1864), the Reclusorio delle Croci in neo-medieval style, and the neo-Gothic facade of the Cathedral of Acireale. He designed the Villino Favaloro - Di Stefano and prominent gardens in Palermo, Caltagirone, and other cities. Basile influenced the urban planning of Monreale and Santa Margherita di Belice. He rests in the family tomb at the Cemetery dei Rotoli in Palermo.
