Philoxenus of Eretria HOUSE OF THE FAUN-REGIO VI

2.36

Philoxenus of Eretria, a Greek painter from the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, a disciple of Nicomachus of Thebes and a member of the Attic-Theban school, painted for Cassander I a Battle of Alexander against Darius, sometimes identified as Issus or Gaugamela. This work was the original for a famous mosaic in Pompeii, found in the House of the Faun. It is highly probable that Philoctetes was also the author of the hunting frieze in the tomb of Philip II of Macedonia at Vergina.
