Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (Frankfurt on the Main, 1749 - Weimar, 1832) was a German writer, poet, playwright, essayist, painter, theologian, philosopher, humanist, scientist, art critic, and music critic. He is considered one of the most representative figures in European cultural history. His activities spanned poetry, drama, literature, theology, philosophy, humanism, and the sciences, and he was also prolific in painting, music, and other arts. He is known for his literary works, among which "Faust" and "The Sorrows of Young Werther" stand out.
