The Order of the Garter is the oldest and most prestigious order of chivalry in England. It was founded in the year 1348 by King Edward III, and its main purpose is to honor those individuals who have rendered outstanding services to the British Crown. Members of the order are personally selected by the sovereign and typically include members of the royal family as well as prominent figures in various fields such as politics, the arts, or sports. The symbol of the order is a dark blue sash with a golden buckle, and members wear a small blue garter on their attire.
