The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, also known as the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, is a famous contemporary art gallery located in Washington D.C. The museum building is a sculpture in itself, with a huge cylinder of reinforced concrete clad in pink granite. It was designed by architect Gordon Bunshaft and opened in 1974. The museum is named after uranium magnate Joseph Hirshhorn, who financed its construction and donated his personal collection of French Impressionist art, American painting, and modern sculpture to the Smithsonian Institution. The museum primarily houses works created after World War II and features significant artists from recent decades.
