It was a clash between French forces under the command of the French general Jean-Baptiste Kléber and the Ottoman-British army led by the Ottoman general Mustafa Pasha. The battle resulted in a victory for the French troops and allowed Napoleon Bonaparte to consolidate his dominance in Egypt.
