Tramonti, hidden among the beautiful green valleys of the Lattari Mountains, offers a unique experience, far from the hustle and bustle of the more famous seaside resorts. This village, whose name literally means "between the mountains," is a mosaic of thirteen hamlets.
Each of these tells a story, has at least one church, and is perfect for enjoying a peaceful, quiet walk.
Among the best-known hamlets are: Pucara, with the Conservatory of San Giuseppe and Santa Teresa, dating back to the late 17th century; Gete, with the rock chapel dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo; Campinola, home to the evocative "secret garden of the soul"; and Paterno S. Arcangelo and Paterno S. Elia, home to delightful historic churches.
I definitely recommend a visit to the Rock Chapel of San Michele Arcangelo, located in the hamlet of Gete: a fine example of rock architecture, with elements dating back to the 13th century, and medieval frescoes inside depicting stories from the Bible and patron saints.
As I mentioned, in Campinola you will find the Secret Garden of the Soul, a true oasis of peace and beauty divided into eight terraces, where different species of plants grow, including citrus trees, numerous varieties of beautiful roses, herbs and medicinal plants.
This area of the coast is a paradise for walkers and hikers, thanks to paths that connect the different hamlets and offer spectacular views of mountain landscapes and terraces, planted mostly with lemon trees and vines.
Perhaps the most distinctive trail is the 15-kilometer-long Sentiero delle 13 Chiese, perfect for exploring Tramonti and all its hamlets. You can start from any of the hamlets, since it is a round-trip route.
A visit to Tramonti also offers a chance to enjoy its authentic flavors, so wine lovers will be interested to know that this area is especially famous for the production of Tintore di Tramonti, made from ancient local grape varieties.
Let me leave you with an interesting fact: According to tradition, it was the nuns of the Conservatory of San Giuseppe and Santa Teresa of Pucara who created a typical liquor of the Amalfi Coast: "Concerto", made from different varieties of local herbs and spices, to which coffee and barley are added.
