The Obstinate Lighthouse is an iconic architectural landmark located in Miami, Florida. It is also known as the Cape Florida Light and is situated within Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on the southern tip of Key Biscayne. Built in 1825, the Obstinate Lighthouse is the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The lighthouse was constructed to help guide ships safely through the dangerous waters surrounding the Florida Keys. The name "Obstinate" comes from the challenging history surrounding the construction of the lighthouse. Prior to its construction, several ships had been wrecked near the area, leading the government to designate the need for a lighthouse. However, due to delays and arguments about the location, the lighthouse was often referred to as "obstinate" in local newspapers. Eventually, the iconic structure was completed and has since become an important symbol of Miami's history and maritime heritage.
